Welcome to the Village Gazette
At the Village Gazette, we believe that strong communities are built on informed citizens. That’s why we’re dedicated to bringing you honest, timely, and locally relevant news from the heart of South Africa’s villages and townships. Whether it’s a community meeting, a local festival, or an important council decision, we’re there—listening, reporting, and sharing what matters most to you.
Our Mission
Our mission is simple: to keep our neighbors connected through trustworthy journalism. In an age of noise and misinformation, we strive to be a quiet, reliable voice—grounded in facts, rooted in community, and focused on the stories that often go untold by larger outlets.
What We Cover
We report on the issues that shape daily life in our region: local government updates, school events, small business spotlights, public safety notices, cultural celebrations, environmental concerns, and human-interest stories from across the village. We cover the small moments that make a big difference—the opening of a new clinic, the victory of the high school rugby team, the legacy of a beloved elder. These are the stories that define us.
About Elara Mkhize
Founded by Elara Mkhize, a lifelong resident of Durban and a former community radio journalist, the Village Gazette began as a handwritten newsletter distributed door-to-door in Berea. What started as a passion project to give voice to overlooked stories has grown into a digital hub trusted by thousands. Elara believes that journalism isn’t just about reporting the news—it’s about honoring the people behind it.
Why This Website Exists
Elara saw too many villages silenced by the absence of local coverage. When national media ignored the struggles and triumphs of places like hers, she decided to act. With a laptop, a notebook, and a deep love for her community, she launched the Village Gazette to fill that gap. Today, it’s more than a website—it’s a lifeline for residents who want to know what’s happening, who’s helping, and where to get involved.
Our Values
We hold ourselves to three core principles: Accuracy—every fact is verified; Empathy—we tell stories with dignity; and Accountability—we correct our mistakes openly. We don’t chase clicks. We chase truth. And we’re grateful every day that you’re here reading with us.
