The President’s Keepers by Jacques Pauw has hit the bookshops

‘The President’s Keepers’ has hit the bookshops and promptly sold out. It’s being reprinted as the State Security Agency responds. But it’s too late, the book is freely available on Amazon and it’s gone viral.

Available through Amazon as a Kindle book at US$17.66. Amazon’s summary reads like a thriller –

“Investigative journalist Jacques Pauw exposes the darkest secret at the heart of Jacob Zuma’s compromised government: a cancerous cabal that eliminates the president’s enemies and purges the law-enforcement agencies of good men and women. As Zuma fights for his political life following the 2017 Gupta emails leak, this cabal – the president’s keepers – ensures that after years of ruinous rule, he remains in power and out of prison. But is Zuma the puppet master, or their puppet? Journey with Pauw as he explores the shadow mafia state. From KwaZulu-Natal and the Western Cape to the corridors of power in Pretoria and Johannesburg – and even to clandestine meetings in Russia. It’s a trail of lies and spies, cronies, cash and kingmakers as Pauw prises open the web of deceit that surrounds the fourth president of the democratic era.”

But how did all this happen in such well engineered stealth ? Was the whole production engineered and managed to have this affect and play out exactly as has happened and is it being financed by powerful backers ?

Is this how it happened ?

  • Author has a plan
  • Starts the ball rolling all those months ago – there’s stuff to do
  • Researches a convoluted and dangerous subject
  • Sets up secret meetings
  • Keeps the research under wraps
  • Burns the midnight oil with the worthies of the legal profession
  • Writes the book
  • Proof reads the manuscript using well versed accomplices sworn to secrecy
  • Keeps single manuscript under lock and key
  • Finds a willing Publisher
  • Book is printed.

And then to everyone’s (mock?) surprise –

  • It sells like hot cakes
  • First 20,000 copies flies off the shelves in a couple of hours
  • A further print is ordered
  • Made available from Amazon as a Kindle book throughout the world
  • Then book pops up as an illegal downloadable PDF

In shock and horror, the State Security Agency leaps into action with much beating of drums and scratching of heads.

But it’s already gone viral and there’s not much the state and political authorities can do about it. They can beat their drums, shake their heads, call in the big guns, but it’s all too late. The battle to publish has been won. No amount of spin is going to turn this lively read into a dust collector.

The Sowetan Live writes

“Within hours of the State Security Agency (SSA) demanding the book be recalled because it “compromised state security”‚ sales spiked‚ a hacked PFD copy of the book was shared widely and Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane was drawn into the controversy.”

But just imagine if this is how it actually went down –

The publishers and backers knew full well the book would be a best seller so they planned the whole campaign down to the last detail. The research, meetings, writing, proofing, editing, publishing, hard copy sales frenzy, availability online, illegal PDF download in the wild and the shock and horror from the SSA panned out as planned. If this is how it happened then the meticulous planning and exceptional management of the process has given us the story of the decade.

The backers can be well pleased as the beautiful petals of their careful plan blossoms into majestic flower.

Of course, I have no idea if this level of planning and subterfuge actually happened.

Reading the various news feeds suggests that the book reads like a Terry Hayes novel. Action aplenty, Deep throat hushed conversations (shades of Watergate), secret meetings, collars up and hat brims pulled down. It will be interesting to watch from the sidelines as the SSA tries to contain the story. Quite what the Public Protector plans to do is anyone’s guess.

People power is a wonderful thing – “viva legal technology viva”.
