Students completing a BA degree in Disaster Management from the Dutch University of Steden, Port Alfred campus, recently visited the Disaster Management Centre of the West Coast District Municipality in Moorreesburg – West Coast.
The purpose of the visit was to learn more about WCDM approach and operations pertaining to Disaster Management.
This modern and technologically advance center hosts various departments such as Emergency services (Ambulance services and Communication Centre), fire services and provincial traffic which enables these departments to share expertise and response strategies in the event of a disaster. Apart from responding to motor vehicle incidents and veld and structural fires, planning on how to prevent possible disasters are done from this center.
Voice of Spokesperson for WCDM, Heinrich Robertson
Manager for Disaster Management at the West Coast District Municipality, Suretha Visser, gave the students some insight into the operations as well as steps taken when doing risk and operational planning. “I’ve been in Disaster Management for more than 20 years and every day I learn something new. There are some scenarios and occurrences for which training and theory cannot prepare you for and then you depend on experience and instincts to make the right call during crises situations” she said during her presentation to the students.
